Perfectionism: Friend or Foe?
I’ve always struggled with perfectionism, believing it to be a strength. But today, a short story from Art & Fear by David Bayles and Ted Orland gave me a fresh perspective:
“Don’t wait for the muse to show up. Your showing up is more likely to summon the muse than the other way around.”
This resonated deeply. Perfectionism, while often seen as an asset, can easily become a liability. It’s a hidden risk factor for burnout, yet it’s glorified—so much so that people often cite it as their "greatest weakness" during job interviews.
The truth is, waiting for perfection can hold us back. Founders who experiment and put ideas into the world quickly are more successful. They learn by doing, refining along the way, rather than endlessly incubating an idea.
The key takeaway? Don’t aim for perfect. Start messy, keep showing up, and let progress guide you toward success.
